Verify First, Believe Later: Why Headline News Needs Fact-Checking

TMZ is treating an unproven story as fact. A Swiss pageant contestant says Donald Trump raped her in 1993. He has not been charged. The White House says it is false. The article is still written as if the verdict is already in. Four problems

  1. TMZ’s headline says Trump is “accused.” The first sentence of the article says he “brutally raped” her, and only then adds that this is her account and that he denies it. That is a verdict with a disclaimer taped on.
  2. They call her a former Miss Switzerland. She was not. She was just a contestant.
  3. The story was placed in a report about Jeffrey Epstein and sex trafficking. Even if every word she says is true, this is not sex trafficking. She was 24. Nobody moved her or held her. Trump invited her and she walked up to the room herself.
  4. She says the attack left bruises all over her body and tore her dress. Then Keul said she completed the pageant in a "daze" and then flew back to Switzerland. A pageant means dressers, other contestants, a stage, and cameras. Nobody is reported to have seen the injuries. There is no police report and no doctor. Bruises all over her body, and she went back on stage and boarded a plane with no one noticing?
